The Crabs Mechanism

The Crabs Mechanism
Originally uploaded by a1scrapmetal.
This mechanism is based on the old "tank" that you could make from a cotton reel, elastic band, lump of candle wax and a stick.
The Cotton reel is replaced here by a cylinder of plaster...an elastic band runs through the centre.
When you pull the end of the cotton, the reel spins thus twisting the elastic band.
Allow the cotton to be re-wound by the twisted elastic and the crab scuttles forward.
the elastic bands around the reel are for grip on the floor.

Want to see him do the backstroke! Possible suggestion, Hazel, as your new camera shows such minute detail...yet sometimes can't see well...maybe a floodlight/spotlight on the piece when photographing would help? Very interested in these types of toys...just always appealed. Also, you give an excellent description of how it works.

More lights mean more shadows and then you have to get more lights to get rid of the shadows - you could spend all day trying to get the photo to look the way you want it. I don't think Hazel has the time to mess about! Especially now that college is looming like a big monster around the corner!

Boo!
